Late Cancellations & Adverse Weather Conditions

HRURS advice for Referees

BBC Hampshire Weather Forecast

If a late decision on the fitness of the ground is needed once teams have turned up on the day of the match, it is the responsibility of the team captains to decide on whether the pitch is fit and safe for play.

  • If they agree the match is started.

  • If they disagree, and one captain wishes to play and the other not, then the match day referee should NOT be asked to decide on the fitness of the pitch. In this scenario the match must not be started.

Once a match has started the referee is the sole judge of fact and law as to whether the pitch is fit for the game to continue. Regardless of the number of minutes played he or she should abandon a match if he or she believes it is appropriate so to do.

A late cancellation is one 3 hours or less before kick off and is the responsibility of the two team captains. It is up to the teams whether then they play or not.

In all cases if a decision is made to cancel the match, please inform the referee immediately so as to minimise travel costs.
