Becoming a Referee

Last Updated 14/12/2007

Body telling you its getting to old to play - but you still want to be involved in the sport?

Forced to stop playing due to injury?       Just want to be involved with the game?

Perhaps you need to become a Rugby Referee !

2008 Hampshire ELRA Courses

You don't have to join the Hampshire Society to be a referee, you can simply do the course and referee for your Club or School.

Course - What course?
Before you referee any game of rugby you should complete the RFU's referee training course - from 14 yrs to 64 yrs !

The course is called the Entry Level Referee Award and is provided locally by RFU appointed trainers. The course is designed both for new referees and those with limited experience seeking to acquire additional knowledge and understanding. It seeks to provide referees with far more than just knowledge of the Laws of the Game and covers areas such as Management and Control, Contextual Judgement, Positioning and Communication.

How long is the course?
The course has 2 modules which each last a day. Normally both modules are taught over a weekend. For course dates click above.

Does it cost?
The current cost of the course is £ 40, but in a lot of cases your club / college / school may help pay this. HRFU will refund 50% of the costs to all new referees who join the Society and complete 10 Society appointments.

I want to do the course - what next?
Although courses still take part in Hampshire they are organised by the RFU. Contact Nigel Cowley of the RFU to make a booking or for further enquires. Dates for courses in Hampshire can be found here or contact Simon Thomas Chairman on 07887 873999 or Dave Hayward Hampshire's RFU Trainer on 02392 265697

Done the course, refereed a couple of games - What's being a Hampshire Society referee like?
Ah - that can be great fun, but needs a whole page to itself.
